Here is one of the things that I have been working to sort out in my mind and heart after spending a couple of days with Rick.
We have become used to hearing the challenge to have balance in our lives. The pursuit of balance according to most people is vitally important. Let me try to explain. The place where this is seen the most is in our attempt to balance the responsibilities at work and home. I am sure all of us have experienced the challenge and reality of this!
This passion for balance has consumed a lot of our communication for years. However, one of Rick’s challenges to me was that “true balance” isn’t reality. Try to think of an area in your life that really has perfect balance. As I have thought about this it proves very true in my life.
What Rick said is that all of us need to see this more in terms of managing the tension. As I have been thinking about this in my life it is fundamental to stay connected to the feeling of tension. Lets look back to the work/home challenge. It is possible, for many reasons, that we dismiss this tension regularly and if we do this enough we can ignore it altogether.
Not sure if this all makes sense but I know that my life is full of areas of tension. My responsibility as a Christ-follower, a husband, a dad, a friend, a pastor, a coach…etc… is to manage all of these tensions. A lot easier said then done!
This definitely is a “foggy idea” right now. What are some of the areas that you are currently feeling this tension? Remember “true balance” isn’t reality. How can we all do a better job leading ourselves and our families to manage the tensions of life?
