Everybody needs mentors…

Pastor Gary and I have been spending these past couple of days with a dear friend and mentor.  Rick was the most influential professor that I have ever known.  Not only is he super knowledgeable and gifted in inspiring his students but he also was masterful at developing relationships.  Rick and his wife, Theresa, led Beth and I through our pre-marital counseling and Rick officiated our wedding.  We have known them for a long time.

He has been a lead pastor for years and this week he cleared a couple days to pray, listen and share his thoughts on the things that have been happening in my life, my family and at Plum Creek.  It is so valuable to have an “outsiders” view into these areas of my life.

One of the many reasons that this is so good for me is that I am a verbal processor.  So while I am articulating verbally I am thinking at my best.  It is also vital to occasionally do this with someone that will give me an honest, heartfelt, caring perspective.  Rick is one of the guys that has done this for me throughout my life.

I guess the key is that he is passionate about the same things that I am passionate about.  He cares about me personally and has proven this over the years.  He wants me to be the best that I can be in every area of my life and has a ton of personal experience that speaks into each of these areas as well.  He is an incredible friend and this has been an incredible couple of days!!
